Artist Bio

Duende Libre is an award-winning jazz trio whose original music draws upon the ancestral musical traditions from Cuba, Brazil, and West Africa. Each having apprenticed with direct descendants and master musicians of these traditions, they consider themselves disciples of their teachers. The result: A euphoric 21st-century jazz that honors its historical roots, pushing open the boundaries of genre to invoke a powerful sonic freedom.

“Each member’s experiences are vital as they filter West African traditional rhythms through their own hands, voices, minds, bodies, each song as much choreography as a composition,” PopMatters wrote. “Hopeful in sound as well as in ideological foundation [the band creates music] full of heart and historical multitudes.”

Outreach programs

“PONTE EL RIMTO”

Be part of a hands-on, call-and-response rhythm and song workshop highlighting instruments from Cuba and Brazil. Clap and dance along with the beat. Presented in Spanish, Portuguese, and English. All ages & abilities welcome.

“PA’ GOZAR! INTRO TO CLAVE & AFRO-LATIN RHYTHM”

Explore the rich and varied rhythmic legacy from Brazil and the Caribbean through hands-on participation, call & response, and collective jamming. We look at clave and how it informs the interlocking parts which give this music its powerful groove. Participants will leave with a deeper appreciation and understanding of what clave is and how they can utilize it in their own music. All ages & abilities welcome.

“HELLO JAZZ!”

An introduction to American Jazz, this workshop highlights the music’s eclectic roots as well as the contributions of important African American innovators. The emphasis is on participation, including call & response and a jam session at the end. Ideal for students K-12.

“BEYOND THE CHANGES: IMPROVISING OUTSIDE THE BOX”

Improvisation takes many forms. Drawing on the work of influential jazz artist and educator Ed Sarath, this workshop explores improvisation using “non-syntactic” elements such as space, ostinato, and silence. All ages & abilities welcome.

Comments on technical requirements

Our tech needs are relatively simple. Our preference is to perform with a grand piano but we can also use a keyboard if no piano is available.
