Typically we do outreach programs to schools and the local nursing home, but we also try each year to have one longer workshop for local adult musicians. This can be one day or two days depending on the performers' schedule and the fee. We apply to Montana Arts Council's AISC grant to get help with this. Often we hear from our local musicians who have attended these workshops how much it is appreciated.
Application Narrative
How is the proposed season different from past programming
We are bringing in a bit more jazz this season and also starting the season with a local band that has a large following.
If you are taking an artistic risk in programming, what is it and why is it a risk?
We decided to open our season with Deep Mountain. This is a fairly new bluegrass band, they have been playing together for approximately two years. Although they play at local pubs and the farmers market in Eureka, this will be the first time they appeared on a real stage with a sound/lighting tech. They are very enthused to be doing this and we are hopeful that their fans will attend the concert to see them perform professionally.
How is your performing arts series significant to your community?
Sunburst's Performing Arts Series is the only series in this community that brings in professional musicians across these genres. There is an outdoor venue (Abayance Bay) that brings in country bands but Sunburst is the only organization locally that brings in jazz, classical, blues, and Americana. Sunburst also strives to make the concerts family-friendly with students 18 and younger getting in for free, and adult tickets $15/person compared to most venues (Abayance Bay, O'Shaugnessy Theater, etc) that usually charge $30 or more per ticket.
What is the audience you wish to reach? (E.g., Describe your current audience or new audience segments you wish to target.)
We have long time audience members who tend to be older (60s +). As new people have moved into the valley, we hope to attract a younger group. We have been seeing these individuals at summer events and hope we can find ways to get them to the winter concert series.
How do you propose to reach this audience? (E.g., Describe program, operational, or marketing strategies that you will use to meet your goal.)
We keep expanding our email list subscribers (we send six e-newsletters out annually thru Mail Chimp), and have a younger person designing our posters now. We are hopeful we can attract the attention of new residents by appealing to the ways they get information as well as by the selection of concerts for the upcoming season. We are especially excited to bring in the Jazz Legacy Project and Duende Libre. We also started advertising our winter series earlier in the summer to take advantage of the audiences at our summer concert series and other outdoor events.

Marketing questions or goals:
We always struggle with how to reach new people in our community. Although we have a presence on social media, put posters up around town, have an email list, and advertise in the local newspaper - there are still people who tell us they never see anything about our concerts. How do we reach those individuals who are new to our community?
