Showcase Description
Brazil-based Argentine composer, accordionist, and educator Alejandro Brittes will make his Western debut at: San José Jazz Festival (CA), Cotati Accordion Festival (CA), Music in Corrales (NM), Kayenta Arts (UT), etc. in Aug-Oct 2024, touring as a trio: accordion, 7-stringed Brazilian guitar, and contrabass.
Hailed by The Boston Globe as a "premier exponent of Chamamé", Brittes explores his chamamé heritage, an ancestral South American rhythm connecting us with the Earth and the Universe through music and dance, which was born of the encounter between the ritual musicality of the indigenous Guaranà and Baroque music. Chamamé is declared as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
In his performances, Brittes explains the roots, evolution and purpose of chamamé, highlighting the formative elements both from Guaranà culture and from Baroque music, also exploring the other cross-border dance genres of the region: rasguido doble, vanerão, milonga, valseado, etc.
