Performer Description

In her solo musical comedy, RHYTHM AND AUTISM, Andee Joyce tells the story of an autistic woman who spent most of her life hidden away, convinced no one would want to listen to her -- and now goes onstage multiple times a week to sing and talk about her autism, getting audiences clapping and swaying (and flapping!) to her beat, and laughing and nodding at her jokes, everywhere she goes. Her story of transformation and release is a full-throated call for inclusion, and a thunderously joyous invitation for everyone to be everything they are.

Showcase Description

I will be performing the first section of RHYTHM AND AUTISM, a combination of sung and spoken material, all written by me. I will use a combination of acoustic guitar, pre-recorded backing tracks, and live looping.

I will be doing the show introduction (with looping) plus a complete scene called "Andy Yr Weerd." It is spelled that way because the "Andy" initially referenced in the song is not me (Andee), but Andy Williams, whose TV series helped cement my weird autistic rhythm fixation at age 7!

The audience can expect an interactive and infectious WONDER YEARS-style narrative about growing up autistic in the 1960s and 1970s, and my late-in-life encounters with an internal “Clappy Monster” that changed my relationship with music (and other people) forever. There will be clapping. There will be flapping. There will be snark, much of it involving the pop culture cheese of the 1960s and 1970s. There may be a few tears and an earworm hook or two. And there will (I hope) be uplift.
