Showcase Description

Different Ships, Same Boat (DSSB) is an interactive, multidisciplinary performance combining powerful spoken word, music & song to explore the multifaceted ways Americans risk, live, love & laugh. Unfolding through a series of chapters — each curating real world stories — literary performer Regie Gibson & composer Guy Mendilow guide audiences with podcast-like narration, at turns humorous, poignant or poetic, over an evocative musical score.

The 250th anniversary of the American Revolution invites us to pause & ask: What might it mean to love & celebrate not just America, but Americans?

DSSB’s moving personal stories give flesh, blood, & bone to the living histories that make up this country. With stories from small towns, cities & ports of entry, along with music spanning lyrical blues & songs from older homes from which today’s Americans came (e.g. Ottoman Jews from present-day Greece), DSSB stirs explorations of the joys, tensions & complexities of who we are & who we wish to be.

Community & Educational Outreach

Extensive community engagement includes:
•Ponder to Page workshops — A fun, easy, safe step-by-step process for crafting resonant stories out of seemingly ordinary experiences (geared for “non-writers”)
•Listening Labs — gatherings in which moving stories told through powerful spoken word, music, & sand animation facilitate generous listening with fellow participants in conversations that are honest, intimate & alive
•Crowdsourced Poems — Poems made from community members’ input & actual words. Folks respond anonymously/candidly to selected prompts. These reflections shape a spoken word poem mirroring the community’s feelings, thoughts & beliefs. The poem is set to original music & shared back live.
•Interactive Children’s performances

Is an outreach performance included in your mainstage performance fee?

In a block booking situation, this fee DOES entail a single outreach event, as long as it does not require an additional day's stay or additional technical production/strike (i.e. technical production occurs in the same venue as the performance, or does not entail technical production). For a sampling of engagement offerings please see uploaded sample 2-Day residency

•Language for press releases
•Language for funding proposals (ASC draws on its strength as a proposal consultancy, e.g. recently raised $1.8M from Mellon)
